Clinchers have become more of the norm in not only triathlon, but road racing as well. There have been certain wheels that we’ve been wanting to make the leap. The Shimano PRO Tri-Spoke is one of them. After all, it’s been ridden to victory in multiple WorldTour time trials by the likes of Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas of Team Sky, Richie Porte and Rohan Dennis of BMC, Primoz Roglic of LottoNL-Jumbo and Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb. And this week, it finally has.
The PRO Tri-spoke Clincher uses the same technology trickled down from the Tubular version, including the same aerodynamic shape as the Tri-spoke Textreme wheel with a 3K 2×2 twill carbon weave and a wide 65mm deep rim design for optimum aerodynamics, suitable for 25mm clincher tires. The PRO Tri-spoke Clincher is built around a Shimano Ultegra 6800 hub, weighing 1040g in total and comes with a protective PRO wheel bag.
The PRO Tri-spoke wheel will be available in January 2018 and MSRP is $1,999.99.
Our Thoughts
At $1,999.99 the cost of entry is steep, rivaling the new Zipp 454 in price. But it’s hard to beat results, and the PRO Tri-Spoke has plenty of them. With the added versatility of being a clincher, we do expect for these to start showing up under top-end age groupers and pros next year in Kona and other major events. And as always, stay tuned – we are working with PRO to get one and will post under #agmailroom on Instagram as soon as it arrives.
