8-21-2016 WiR

One of the benefits of living on the east coast this week was that we could get our morning workout in and still have time to watch the Women’s triathlon in Rio. A big congratulations to Gwen Jorgensen for taking home the gold. And congrats to Nicola Spirig and Vicky Holland for silver and bronze. Also, are we the only ones that are dying to know what Gwen and Nicola were saying to each other during their game of cat and mouse?

Also, lest we forget the men, congrats to Alistair and Jonny Brownlee for gold and silver with Henri Schoeman rounding out the podium with the bronze!

The Blue Cycles Triad Elite SL

We don’t have the full details yet. but that doesn’t mean Blue Cycles hasn’t been busy showing off their new bike.

We expect to have the full scoop in September at Interbike, so stay tuned!

Pearl Goes All in from T1 – T2

This week Pearl Izumi announced that as part of it’s “all in” commitment to cycling apparel and footwear, the decision has been made to exit the Run business and focus completely on its core cycling business effective January of 2017.

“Over the past 13 years, our Run team has designed award-winning product and gained a loyal consumer following. This is a tough decision, but it’s time to recommit to our core,” said Mike O’Connor, Pearl Izumi’s President.

The move is intended to focus Pearl Izumi on one thing: being the best at performance cycling, mountain bike, and tri apparel, shoes and accessories. And while we love this singular focus, we cannot help but be disappointed. We were huge fans of the Tri N1 when we reviewed them, and hate to see a great product leave the market. But if this means shoes like the Tri Fly Octane will get even better, we can live with the decision.

The Mail Room

The mail room has been busy the past few weeks with products designed to do everything from fueling and helping your bike get to the race site to protecting your noggin between T1 and T2. Which means that we are going to be busy as we head into the fall – no rest for the weary! So let’s start with fueling since we have to have the energy to perform… and review! Beachbody Performance sent us their Energize and Hydrate products for pre- and during workouts. And Safe Catch sent us their Elite Tuna to help us prepare quick post-workout meals.

For getting to our races, RockyMounts sent us their SplitRail hitch to check out. We took a quick look at the SplitRail in a WiR, but this will be our first chance to get some serious time with it.

For on the bike, we have a pair of TriRig’s new Kappas to play with. These were shipped to us along with an AlphaX integrated cockpit, which we plan on mounting on our P2 test bike with a Campagnolo Record EPS v3 groupset that we also received this week. Cervelo + TriRig + Campagnolo (plus Bontrager Aeolus 9 TLR D3s to ride on)? Yeah, let’s just say that we’re pretty excited.

Just in case anything breaks down, FixIt Sticks sent us their new mounting bracket to make taking a multi-tool on your rides even easier. We’ve always hated sticking a multi-tool with its sharp edges next to our backup tubes. Having the multi-tool mounted externally makes all the sense in the world to us.

Finally, to protect us while we’re training and racing, we have the MET Manta aero road helmet and MET Drone aero helmet. Yeah we call that some busy time in the mail room!
