Campagnolo EPS V3 and MyCampy – First Look

Campagnolo may be one of the most haloed names in road cycling, but rarely, if ever, do we see Campy components show up in transition. There were just 38 Campagnolo groupsets on athletes’ bikes at Kona (compared to Shimano’s 1860 and SRAM’s 402). Campagnolo wants that to change and is driving its EPS (Electronic Power Shift) technology forward to make that happen.

Campagnolo EPS V3

With V3, Campagnolo has made a number of improvements to its EPS system. First, the interface unit received a new charging port that allows for easy access, as well as a new shape that is more aerodynamic than its provide information to riders more effectively.

With its new wireless communication capabilities, EPS V3 is capable of being completely customized. Its functions can be tailored to the exact demands of any athlete, by way of the MyCampy app (more on that below) available for tablets and smartphones. Performance characteristics can be modified, individual buttons and levers can be customized, and diagnostics can be immediately taken.

With V3, we also are getting a new Power Unit (battery). This new version maintains all of the previous characteristics and technologies that derive from the V2—such as a vibration-absorbing outer material and ultrasonic seals providing a waterproof construction—and houses them all in a slimmer, more versatile package meant specifically for aerodynamic frames with slimmer tube forms.

The MyCampy App

We got our first chance to see the MyCampy app at Interbike, and even in its beta form, we were thoroughly impressed. The new MyCampy App is meant to be a do-it-all companion that assists in managing your cycling activity and cycling kit both in the saddle and off. It can keep track of your entire garage of bikes and the components built on each, as well as track EPS performance analytics and customize its operation.

MyCampy starts with MyGarage. MyGarage keeps a detailed inventory of your cycling equipment, tracking exactly how many kilometers each and every component, wheel, chain or cassette has done and when it might be time to perform general maintenance to keep things functioning like new.

MySessions is an analytical tool that offers a look into your performance in addition to how it is affected by your use of components. Track each and every shift, know exactly where when and how you were riding a specific segment in addition to getting tips and suggestions to improve your efficiency on the bike, all in conjunction with the newest wireless capabilities of the V3 EPS Interface.

Finally is MyEPS, which we think is the most exciting part of MyCampy. MyEPS offers the possibility of interacting in a 360° manner with your Campagnolo electronic drivetrain by connecting wirelessly with your EPS groupset in order to: fully customize commands and system performance, instantly download and install new firmware, and offer real-time diagnostics for each and every individual EPS component. At Interbike, Campagnolo demonstrated how you could remap your EPS controls in just seconds. Want faster shift times? What about double shifts instead of single? The MyCampy app can handle it.

Wrapping Up

With V3 and MyCampy, Campagnolo is looking to up the game when it comes to what you can do with an electronic groupset. Will this have an impact on the number of groupsets we see in transition? Only time will tell. For now, stay tuned to AeroGeeks.com for all the latest on Campagnolo, and keep your eyes peeled for a full EPS review.
