“Have a safe ride” is much more than a casual phrase to the AeroGeeks. We encourage our friends and family to not only be safe on the road, but to also ride with the equipment that helps keep them safe. That’s why it should be no surprise how excited we were to sit down with the team from Cycliq to see the Fly12 in person. For those unfamiliar, the Fly12 takes everything we love about the Fly6 and moves the camera up front. Oh, and there are also a few new tricks thrown in there for good measure.

Cycliq Fly12

The Fly12 starts with a 1080p front-facing camera combined with a 400-lumen front light. The camera runs in a continuous loop so you never have to clear out the storage. If (hopefully not when) it detects a crash, the camera will save that specific video file in a protected place so it cannot be written over.

In camera-only mode the system can run for a claimed 10 hours. With the light flashing, the battery drops to six hours. With the light on continuously, you get a claimed two hours of life. As with the Fly6, when the battery is close to dying, the light shuts off but the camera keeps recording.

One of the new tricks of the Fly12 (compared to the Fly6) is the fact that it has built in Wi-Fi. When the Wi-Fi is enabled before or after your ride, you can customize the light settings as well download any footage from the camera to an app on your smart phone. This turns the Fly12 from just a safety light to a legitimate “bragging rights” light. Want to show off your come-from-behind victory? The Fly12 will have you covered.

Another trick is the ability to use the Fly12 as a bike alarm. Using the app, you can tell the camera to detect any movement of your bike while you stop in for a quick latte. If movement is detected, an alarm will sound. It’s a small thing, but it will be a welcome feature for those of us in more urban environments.

The Fly12 connects to your bike via a standard GoPro double-post mount – this is becoming the new norm for mounting equipment to your cockpit (and why K-Edge has a great product in it’s new ¼ turn / GoPro mount). The current retail price is a planned on $349, but the Cycliq team is still working to push that down a bit lower.
