Shimano CM-1000 Sport Camera – First Look

The action camera market got a little more crowded on Monday when Shimano introduced their new CM-1000 Sport Camera, and we couldn’t be more excited. As any reader of AeroGeeks knows – we are fans of this versatile camera segment. Not only can we record our favorite rides, but action cameras allow you to analyze your own form and can provide a black box for when disaster strikes.

Shimano’s new product can shoot up to 1080p at 30fps, while also supporting 720@120fps and 360@240fps. The CM-1000 can shoot still images at 6MP at intervals of 10, 20, 30 and 60 seconds. Images are captured via a 16MP back illuminated CMOS sensor. One of the unique aspects of the Shimano is that it has built-in auto image rotation that levels the camera to the nearest 90° (0, 90,180, and 270). No longer will you have to adjust your video after the fact – the CM-1000 shoots in the orientation that makes the most sense.

Like the GoPro Hero3, Sony HDR-AS30V and Gamin Virb Elite – the Shimano has built-in Wi-Fi that can be paired with a smartphone through Shimano’s app. Like Garmin, Shimano has included an ANT+ receiver that allows it to capture speed, cadence, power and heart rate data. If you are using Di2 and have Shimano’s recently announced SM-EWW01 data transmitter – you will also be able to record current gear selection.

One spec that shouldn’t be a surprise is that Shimano took waterproofing seriously (since one of Shimano’s core businesses is fishing products). The CM-1000 is IPX8 certified which indicates it is good down to 10m, all without any sort of additional external housing. The CM is also rated from -10C (14F) to 40C (104F) with an expected battery life of 2 hours. All of this at a weight of only 86g (comparatively the GoPro Hero3+ Black weighs in at 135g).

At a price of $299 the Shimano comes in about where we expect – similarly priced to the Garmin Virb and GoPro Silver. Priced any higher and we would have wanted to see either GPS or a much higher resolution, but at $299 the price is pretty spot on. Available in May, we’re very eager to spend some serious time with the Shimano CM-1000 Sport Camera.
